Europe should put that money to work for its companies. Brussels has a name for the project: the Savings and Investments Union.

Deal by year’s end, she said — with all 27 countries, or with whoever is willing.

She did not announce a raid on your checking account. She did something more revealing. She talked about other people’s rainy-day cash like it was inventory on a warehouse floor.

Savings are not lazy. Savings are a family deciding the state does not get the last word.

If a government starts from “that money should serve our plan,” the plan always grows. Nudges become rules. Rules become products you are steered into. “For the companies” is how they say “not yours to leave alone.”
