@tech_twi Yes,the main reason for high duty is because Government USED to subsidize fuel, so government says if you have a high engine capacity car then the more you pay. Few years ago that policy was abolished. And they are using engine capacity to determine duty 😭..Herh 🇬🇭

If you import a 2002 corolla Ghana and the mileage is less than 6km, it’s considered as a new car. 🤷🏾‍♂️ Government won’t give you any discount.

If I want to import a 2002 Corolla from Ghana to the US, I would pay around $160 in import duty, which is about GH¢1,900. But if I want to import the same car from the US to Ghana, the Ghanaian government would charge around $7,300, which is about GH¢75,904. That’s over a 3,895% increase. The US, an advanced country with much higher wages, exempts much of the tax because the car is old. But Ghana, which can’t even produce cars locally and has a daily minimum wage of around GH¢20, adds penalties because the car is old, even though they know many people can’t afford newer ones. Do you see the nonsense in this?

@FuqiJama @tech_twi So Government gives you 50% discount, now the actual price of the car is $9000 after discount, that’s the figure customs will use to calculate your duty. 😂 even those you bought the car for $3000, that’s why our duty is EXPENSIVE 😩

You are too slow man. Both duty prices are not reasonable. People buy cars that are over 10 years old because they simply don’t have the money. You don’t punish people for a system that you created. In the US, the UK, and Canada, where wages are much higher, people still buy and drive 2002 model cars. Their property taxes or vehicle registration fees are generally lower because of the car’s value. They don’t increase those charges simply because someone chooses to drive an older car.

@WizzyBone01 @tech_twi You’re very wrong. It’s the system used by Ghana custom that makes it expensive. When u submit your car for clearance, customs goes to the car manufacturer to take the actual price of the vehicle and then put you in a classification

Used Elantra $2,200 that’s like 25,000ghc but if I want to send it to someone in Ghana, the Ghana Government says you have to pay 65,156ghc on duty. In fact, this nonsense has to stop. Looking at this for example makes the Government’s reason why extortion has been normalized.
