@drnickisaac If a paper deserved open access status, this is surely it. Shame about that.

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

@BrianLaney2 @BSBIbotany @drmgoeswild Can't tell, I'm afraid, Brian. I can't see its bracts clearly enough.

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

@BrianLaney2 @LEGrable @BSBIbotany @HantsIWWildlife No, I've not seen a white one. When it first emerges it's white with purple edges, but I guess he meant white when mature.

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

@BrianLaney2 @BSBIbotany @BrennanMartine Upper lvs suggest verna or intermedia. Flower size suggests verna.

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

@SarahWhild @BSBIbotany @JCGardener With those spiny leaf margins, I'd say so. Apart from colouring OK, hard to say from flowers.

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

@Bertolicus Nationally - not many records, most don't report status. Those that do all say "planted deliberately" and most are singletons.

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

@Bertolicus In Hants - No, Matt. We only have the two records of planted specimens - yours in VC12, mine in VC11 (Ampfield).

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

@GranthamEcology @BSBIbotany Graham, I think your Canadian Fleabane is Guernsey Fleabane (Conyza sumatrensis).

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

#newyearplanthunt 53 found along coast in SE Hants today. Rarest - Sea Radish. Most surprising - Sea-purslane. Most cheering - Coltsfoot!

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

@AngelikaHTCG @BSBIbotany I think you've got a different plant there!

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

@AngelikaHTCG @BSBIbotany Any lvs up the stem worth going for. Basal lvs v variable in shape but a photo showing hairs or lack of, good

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

@BSBIbotany @AngelikaHTCG Not much detail to go on, but it looks like Smooth Hawk's-beard (Crepis capillaris) to me. Check stem lvs if any.

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

@JohnMGrimshaw @botanicalmartin @BSBIbotany @DrTrevorDines Calluna. Erica vagans has longer leaves, less deeply divided corollas.

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

@slowbernsmokery I think you did!

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

@BSBIbotany @BumblebeeTrust @YockGranola @botanicalmartin Yes, fab plant, occasionally escapes into wild e.g. in old quarries / riverbanks

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

.@RichardMabbutt @BSBIbotany @PinkfootedGus @botanicalmartin @DrTrevorDines @BrianE_Cambs @BrianLaney2 Agreed.

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

.@BSBIbotany @macstronach @SaveCairngorms Yes, corolla lobes are unequal pairs, flowers all 4-merous

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

.@BSBIbotany @ElliottatChev Not campestris (calyces, most 5-merous flowers). amarella ssp. septentrionalis poss if in N - else just white!

[Martin Rand @martin_rand]

.@joshual951 @moorsmaid75 @BSBIbotany @botanicalmartin Indeed, member of Caryophyllaceae, looks like Petrorhagia (=Tunica) saxifraga.
