The coffee shop I go to has a regular who's been ordering "the usual" for so long that nobody remembers what the usual actually is but they're too afraid to ask so they just make different drinks every time and he's never complained. Barista told me this in confidence. They've been guessing for EIGHT MONTHS. Sometimes it's a latte. Sometimes cold brew. Once they gave him tea. He just says thanks and leaves. Staff has a group chat dedicated to figuring out what his actual usual is. They've tried pattern recognition. Analyzed his reactions. Nothing definitive. One barista suggested just asking him and the manager said absolutely not, we're in too deep. Yesterday they gave him hot chocolate and he said "perfect, just what I needed" so either he's the most easy-going person alive or he also forgot what his usual is and is just going with it. Either way there's a whole conspiracy happening behind the counter of a coffee shop about what this man wants to drink. I'm invested now. I go specifically to see what he gets. Took a survey of the options: 40% coffee-based, 30% espresso-based, 20% tea, 10% wild cards. He's never ordered food. Only drinks. This is the most exciting part of my week.
