The @US_FDA's Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) program allows companies to self-affirm additives they create.
In the 1990s and early 2000s just two FDA scientists were overseeing all voluntary GRAS notifications according to the @USGAO.
This is a loophole unique to the FDA.
Many of the toxic additives allowed in U.S. foods have already been banned or require warning labels elsewhere. Europe, Canada, and dozens of other countries around the world have successfully reformulated products with safer ingredients. Now, food companies are following suit stateside.
GRAS is uniquely American – it has NO equivalent in any other country.

Self-regulation is not safety. We support the FDA’s efforts to reform and even eliminate the GRAS loophole. The “Generally Regarded as Safe” standard is not getting the job done @FDA_KyleD

.@MagnoliaPics on Friday will release Good Night, and Good Luck: Live From Broadway on @PrimeVideo and other digital platforms.
"Magnolia owns worldwide rights and releases the film through 2929, which produced the original film with @Participant.
The live-capture film going on sale and rental platforms stars Ilana Glazer, Glenn Fleshler, Clark Gregg, Carter Hudson, Paul Gross, Christopher Denham and Fran Kranz. Clooney and Grant Heslov wrote the play from their original script for the 2005 movie." (via @DEADLINE)
George Clooney directed the acclaimed 2005 film and played CBS producer Fred Friendly, but this time he plays Edward R. Murrow, the chain-smoking iconic newsman who took on Joseph McCarthy and his House Un-American Activities Committee cancel campaign undertaken to root out communists at the height of the Cold War. https://t.co/tOc4O56lRn
Two things can be true: it shouldn’t be on the consumer. While warning labels and SNAP restrictions are helpful, just limiting consumer options isn’t the full story.
The answer is fixing our existing regulations on companies like the @US_FDA GRAS loophole allowing 10k+ additives to be created and self-certified by CPGs’ own scientists, where other countries allow ~400 and have to demonstrate each additive’s safety in food to a higher standard.

The California State Assembly just advanced AB 1264, the California School Safety Act – the first bill in the nation to begin phasing out harmful ultra-processed foods (UPFs) from school meals!
