Winston Churchill did an insane amount of reading throughout his life.

He had personally asked his mother to send him large shipments of books every month while he was in the military.

But just how did Churchill read? The description:

"He read the eight volumes of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire straight through in the glittering middle hours of the day, from the end of stables until the shadows said it was time for polo. He scribbled in the margins. He took Gibbon’s side against the editor. When he finished the history he immediately started Gibbon’s autobiography, bound in the same set. Then Macaulay. Then Plato. Aristotle. Schopenhauer. Malthus. Darwin. Adam Smith. Four or five hours a day, often four books at once. He was not collecting quotations. He was building the education he had been denied, and he was doing it on a charpoy in a garrison town he described as a third rate watering place without the sea.

The habit never left him. As a young officer he ordered his own military books because the academy would not. Later, writing The World Crisis, he consumed a book a day. In the Second World War the doctors told him not to work. He had Pride and Prejudice read aloud to him from the foot of the bed in Carthage and remarked on how calm those lives had been. He could recite pages of Macaulay. He wrote more than most men who only write. History was never entertainment to him. It was the storehouse he reached into when the room went dark and someone had to speak.

Even at the height of power he kept the same fever. The boy who had been last in his class had decided that a life must be nailed to a cross of either Thought or Action, and then refused to choose. He did both."
