This is pure extortion of money from seafarers by introducing a preparatory course that is not required. If you are really worried about failure of the candidates, introduce this course free of cost.

Looks like this course is not meant to revive failing candidates but to revive failing finances of CMMI.

What do seafarers expect from a company when a seafarer dies onboard?

That the company should:

• Personally send someone to the seafarer’s home to deliver the news to the family, not just over phone.

• Appoint a single point of contact to help the family with their many and obvious queries.

• Ensure the insurance amount reaches the family smoothly—especially if seafarer was the sole breadwinner—without making them fight for it.

• Organise a fund-raiser among all shore and sea staff to support the family.

• And most importantly, help the bereaved family find closure.

Sadly, what most companies do is the complete opposite.

Sorry but as per @dgshipping_IN if he deserts the ship, his license will be cancelled for 2 years because his actions will be considered as damaging the reputation of Indian seafarers.

There many such cases and what DGS order no 10 is doing is making it difficult for seafarers to come out of these cases.

There are 23 violations listed for seafarers along with the strict actions for those violations.

But only 3 violations are listed for companies.

Moreover we all remember what happened when @dgshipping_IN suspended the license of one of the major company for 2 years. DGS could not sustain that suspension for more than few days.

Which means that order no 10 has no value for seafarers. It won’t better their life a bit but will give companies the tool to harass the seafarers.

If this is not slavery at sea, then what is?

Many ships around the world remain at anchor for many days (some for more than 15-20 days).

They collect food waste that remain on board for so long.

Upon berthing, many ports don’t have garbage reception facilities and food waste remain onboard until ship arrive a suitable place where they can throw it overboard.

By bringing strict environmental regulations without any technological advancements or infrastructural support, what we are actually achieving is “Cleaner Sea and Dirtier ships”.
