🇵🇷 “For 128 years of U.S. rule, Puerto Rico has been a colony”

Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic nominee for Congress in New York’s 13th District, marked the 128th anniversary of the July 25, 1898 U.S. invasion of Puerto Rico by calling for an end to American colonial rule and declaring her support for the island’s independence.

U.S. troops landed at Guánica during the Spanish-American War, and Spain ceded the island under the Treaty of Paris without any input from Puerto Ricans. In 1900 the Foraker Act established that Puerto Rico “belongs to the United States, but is not the United States, nor a part of the United States,” a formula that has defined its status ever since. Congress imposed U.S. citizenship in 1917, months before Puerto Ricans were drafted into World War I, yet residents still cannot vote for president and have no voting representation in Congress.

Avila Chevalier pointed to widespread poverty, recurring blackouts, the federal response to Hurricane Maria and the unelected fiscal oversight board known as La Junta, which was imposed by Congress in 2016 to restructure the island’s debt and holds power over its budget above the elected government.

“I also support independence for the Puerto Rican people,” she said. “Because after 128 years, it’s the least the people on the island deserve.”

💢 Video shows the moment a drone attack struck Iraqi army positions in the Makhmour district of Nineveh province, western Iraq, as questions grow over the drones used and Tehran warns of possible false-flag incidents in the region.

➤ Iraqi authorities say four drones were involved. Three struck positions belonging to the Field Engineering Battalion of the Iraqi Army’s 14th Infantry Division, while a fourth drone was intercepted by air defenses.

➤ The Iraqi Defense Ministry said no soldiers were killed, though two explosive drones detonated near the battalion’s position and damaged the facility.

➤ Separately, Reuters reported that at least six French soldiers were wounded in a drone attack targeting a joint Peshmerga–French base in the same Makhmour area, according to Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw and a security source.

➤ The origin of the drones used in the two attacks has not been confirmed. Iranian officials have warned that some recent incidents may involve attempts to stage or manipulate attacks in ways that could be blamed on Iran and escalate regional tensions. Tehran has categorically denied involvement in the drone strike on the Port of Oman yesterday—an incident targeting a country that has maintained relatively cordial relations with Iran—and described it as a potential “false flag.”

➤ Foreign Affairs magazine notes the U.S. military debuted a new low-cost attack drone in the attacks on Iran that began Feb. 28. Known as LUCAS (Low-Cost Unmanned Combat Attack System), the system modeled on Iran’s inexpensive one-way attack drone the Shahed-136. U.S. Central Command confirmed the drones were used in those operations and said additional units remain ready for deployment. Watch clip below.

Cuba is distributing more than 2,000 tons of humanitarian aid sent by the Mexican government. The aid, which includes food, hygiene products and other basic goods, is being given free of charge to the most vulnerable families across the island.

➤ The IRGC said the 37th wave of Operation “True Promise 4” was carried out with sustained, layered launches of super-heavy Khorramshahr missiles for more than three hours against U.S. and Israeli positions.

➤ During the heavy assault, the “HaEla” satellite communications center south of Tel Aviv was targeted for a second time. Military centers in Be’er Ya’akov, West Jerusalem, and Haifa were also struck.

➤ U.S. positions in Erbil and the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters were also placed under heavy fire by the armed forces of the Islamic Republic.

➤ The statement says targeted and forceful attacks will continue until the defined objectives are achieved, adding: “In this battle we are thinking only of the enemy’s complete surrender.”

Greta Thunberg sent solidarity to the eight individuals on hunger strike in British prisons, demanding that the government meet their calls for immediate bail, the right to a fair trial, the de‑prescription of Palestine Action, and an end to censorship.

They have been held in prison for a year without trial and are now on their 42nd day of hunger strike, threatening their health.

Thunberg urges the government not to ignore their demands, while continuing to press for the shutdown of Elbit Systems.

🇨🇴 Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro fires back at the Trump administration after Washington announced sanctions against him, along with his wife, son, and interior minister, over unsubstantiated allegations of financial ties to drug trafficking. Petro said:

🇵🇸🇺🇳Palestinian-American legal scholar Noura Erakat (@4noura) made history Monday as only the second Palestinian woman to brief the UN Security Council since October 7, 2023— and the first to present the legal case that Israel’s war on Gaza is genocide.

Speaking for over 10 minutes, Erakat explained how Israel’s campaign amounts to the deliberate destruction of Palestinian life, laying out a four-part case of genocide through attacks on reproductive capacity:

⭕️ Stage 1 - Preventing conception:
92% of homes destroyed, privacy impossible. Systematic sexual torture in captivity including rape, forced nudity, electrocution of genitalia, creating trauma that impede sexual intimacy. Israel bombed the Al-Basma fertility clinic, destroying 4,000 embryos and over 1,000 vials of genetic material. Birth rates have plummeted 41% since 2022.

⭕️ Stage 2 - Preventing gestation:
Constant bombardment, destroyed medical facilities, hunger and disease make carrying pregnancies nearly impossible. Miscarriage rates increased 300% by 2024.

⭕️ Stage 3 - Preventing delivery:
55,000 women lack prenatal care. Fifteen women weekly deliver in “appalling conditions”—public bathrooms, without hospitals. Erakat describes C-sections without anesthesia, and “pain beyond human tolerance.”

⭕️ Stage 4 - Preventing survival:
Famine has been confirmed. Over 60% of mothers can’t produce milk due to starvation. At least 450 babies were born and killed during the genocide.

She urged the Council to ensure any end to the genocide does not come at the expense of accountability or international law—calling for UN, not Israeli, oversight of Gaza. She also called for protection of ICC and ICJ proceedings, and for ensuring that Palestinian women take part in rebuilding Gaza.

“Should you be paralyzed by fear, look to Palestinian women. They refused to surrender. Neither should you,” she concluded.

At Mexico City’s Zócalo, Puerto Rican rapper Residente – the most decorated artist in Latin Grammy history – used his free, city-sponsored concert to demonstrate solidarity with Palestine. He brought the Abed family, refugees from Gaza, on stage before a crowd of 180,000, as chants of “Palestina Libre” (Free Palestine!) echoed across one of the world’s largest public squares.
