This is the thing. If you take an adversarial stance towards the government (as journalists frequently should) you will lose “access” to routine, daily updates/news, easy stories, etc.

I could care less if the government likes me or feeds me info. I have other sources.

As a Rwandan styding at @ASU @CronkiteGlobal, it was deeply moving to witness @Cronkite_ASU students share their powerful reflections during the Cronkite Gallery Reception: Photojournalism in the 'Land of a Thousand Hills' at @ASU. Their photos and testimonies captured the vibrant spirit of Rwanda, its people, resilience, and culture.

Some students admitted they had only known Rwanda through the lens of movie; viewing it as a country marked by tragedy of the Genocide Against the Tutsi in 1994. But after living and learning in Kigali for 3 weeks, their perspective changed entirely. They saw a nation that has risen from its past with unity and hope. A country defined not by its darkest chapter, but by the strength, hospitality, and joy of its people.

They spoke of being embraced by families, celebrating local milestones, and forming lasting friendships with translators and community members. Rwanda became their second home. And as they said, “Rwandans don’t just say ‘this is your home’—they mean it.”

I’m proud to have witnessed this event and even more excited to welcome the next cohort to Kigali this summer when I will be back home after my @HumphreyProgram. Let their lenses continue to capture the stories of today’s Rwanda.
