As the much-awaited OND rainy season draws nearer, medium and short range forecasts are progressively aligning with the long range forecasts we started sharing back in May.
An expansive low pressure zone of deep atmospheric convection, thunderstorms & open sea precipitation has been developing in the Central & Western Indian Ocean over the last three weeks. This is a pointer to a developing +ve IOD coupled with a strong El Nino and favorable conditions setting up for an early onset of significant rains across Eastern Africa in the coming weeks.
All global models are in agreement that this convective belt will expand exponentially this month and propagate Westward towards the Horn of Africa.
Any time from from 10th to mid- Sept Southern Somalia, and the #Kenyan Coastal strip may receive significant pre-seasonal rains from this slow-moving low pressure system. Some locations deep in the Indian Ocean may receive as much as 300mm-500mm in the next few days.
Per some individual North American models, onset of seasonal rains starts in Somalia, Mandera, Wajir & Marsabit in the 1st week of Oct. Some erratic showers may fall in the Rift, Western & Nyanza later this month. The rest of KE is likely to see onset of the OND rains from Mid-October with increased intensity from late Oct onwards.
