After 26 years at the World Bank, I gave my farewell public lecture: Policy for the People.
Development works when we design with people, not for them.
Listen first. Co-produce. Build agency.

I reflect on:
• what numbers miss
• the value of narratives and open-ended interviews
• why tracking process matters as much as outcomes
• the importance of culture, history & context in policy design
• listening to those affected by policy
Three examples:
• the underside of growth in Malaysia
• how women’s groups transformed Bihar
• the added value of village democracy in Karnataka

Switzerland, the land of cheese, chocolate… and intelligence! 🧠🇨🇭
According to a ranking by World of Card Games, Switzerland is the most intelligent country in the world:
🥇 Switzerland - 92.02/100
🥈 United Kingdom - 89.40/100
🥉 United States - 89.18/100
The criteria include the number of Nobel Prize nominations, university rankings, the average IQ of countries (based on the Lynn-Becker scale), and levels of higher education. 🎓
While this ranking provides context to the notion of intelligence, it takes many forms beyond academia, recognition, or measurements.
