I asked for the value of my open ticket or the breakup and they don’t have or can’t share apparently. Now I question this manual process and whom to believe and the quality of service. It’s not fair for me to pay 3odd times more money for a broken process. PLS HELP

So I decided to call back at 11:13PM. Got connected to Srushti. After a long wait, And to my shock she said BOM-JFK is INR 26k and BOM-EWR is INR 55k. I was in shock cos that’s not what I expected. Upon asking about the rates Omkar gave, she said the rates were incorrect.

@airindia Full refund will mean I need to make fresh booking which will cost me more. If I accept the alternate flight, I need to pay for stay and airport transfers. How is that fair to a person who’s traveling to a foreign country? You address that?

🧵Someone recently asked me for my take on Peter Zeihan's analysis of Canada's economic situation. This is it.

A lot of Zeihan's analysis completely breaks down around immigration.

People just aren't interchangeable the way he and most of the global elite imagine.

For an example unique to the Canadian context: A lot of Immigrants leave. It's been true since the 1890s.

Canada's weather is very rough and tempestuous, its economy is equally tempestuous, and lots of people give up and leave. There are folk songs from the 50s and earlier about emigrating to Canada only for it to be 40 below, the weather to be awful, and for the emigrates to go bankrupt and have to return east second class.

Surveys suggest Right now about 30% of recent arrivals are planning to move back to their home countries because the cost of living is too high, they aren't earning enough, and they'd much rather take what savings they built and be rich in India than keep living with roommates in Toronto and Brampton. Considering we're almost certainly entering a recession and subsequent housing crash sometime in the next 2 years... that's probably going to spike, heavily, especially since immigrant families are the most overleveraged on their mortgages (some groups even developed outright cultures of fraud or multiple mortgaging to afford houses)

And keeping that influx of immigrants flowing will just be impossible when the economy's down, they don't have job offers, a good chunk of the country is unemployed, and hundreds of thousands have already left and are telling their friends back home the country's a scam (US prices for EU wages)

This is kinda one of the unique things about Canada's established populations the English, French, and Natives... they're stuck here, they've been stuck here, and until very recently they had strong cultures around "Survival" because they'd all knew how much the country could suck and how invested they had to be in each other... Creating a country of unsupported transplants in one of the worst climates for weather and economics is going to look like a really bad idea 10 years from now.

And yet in spite of this culture of endurance, Canada has some the worst braindrain of any country in the western hemisphere, there are entire expat populations in the hundreds of thousands that technically all have Canadian citizenship, but functionally are natives of other cultures all together... Notably the 300,000 ethnic Chinese (just under 1% of all Canadians) who live in Hong Kong, and basically keep their Canadian passports as escape pods incase the city-state implodes.

Canada's the country that bet heaviest on the idea it could paper over its unsustainable welfare state with mass immigration, and that bet's going go bad really soon. You see how much people are paying to live in Toronto and Vancouver vs. How little the average wage is there compared to comparable US and Australian cities, and something has to give.

Canada's GDP per capita is about 52k, in the US its 70k... and yet the cost of living is massively lower in the US, and its a vastly better environment for business not least because you have a domestic market of 340 million ,whereas Canadians can barely trade interprovincially.

The Diverse Canadian post-national Crossroads-of-the-world Dream is a bubble that's at its end. Its going to go back to being the frigid bitter land of disappointment it's always been, and some will adapt, and integrate and become the new old stock Canadians across a decade+ of broken dreams, and plenty more will do the sensible thing and go elsewhere.

The most likely outcome is next economic downturn (which might already be starting) Canadian real estate implodes, a lot of the problems that have been papered over bubble up, and all those Canadians and "Canadians" who have second passports just leave, hell its already very common for people to attend the citizenship ceremony, get a Canadian passport and life long residency rights (plus the juicy visa-free travel to 100+ countries that comes with it)... and then move out of the country within the next month for whatever greener higher paying pasture they have lined up.

Canada has turned itself into a country with a population as fixed as that of subregions in other countries... It might be the first country to see population decline simply from economic flight, Ussually that can only happen in subnational entities without borders, like Detroit... But Canada could actually break new ground here
