Just thinking out loud here. With the #NHL taking away fitness testing from all training camps starting in September, what is the point of having fitness testing at the combine for draft eligible players? Who cares how many times a 17-18 year old can bench 145. They are kids. Sam Bennett couldn’t do a single pull up and turned out okay. Tyler Biggs bench pressed 145 61 times because he was snorting creatine at the age of 14. How’d that turn out. My point being, and I’ve said this since I was 13 years old, until they find a stick long enough to score from the weight room, off ice training in hockey will never matter. Everyone works out and works hard these days. There’s never been a bench press at center ice. I’ve never seen a V02 bike in the corners. And certainly never seen someone use their vertical to play above the rim on skates. Fitness testing for minors is stupid. It’s stupid at an NHL camp, even dumber for draft eligible players. Always thought it was weird that you wore a tank top and tight spandex for a bunch of old creepy dudes to watch you workout too. Felt like I was walking into Epstein island back in 2012. Nothing replicates just playing the game and evaluating on ice. It’s hockey. Do your homework on the kids. Watching them long jump on carpet inside of a 3 diamond hotel conference room ain’t gonna solve anything.
