We are a coalition of advocates concerned by Governor Hogan's plan to expand I-495 & I-270. MD's future relies on sustainable transportation, not new highways.
Maryland Advocates for Sustainable Transportation is a growing coalition of over 20 non-profit advocacy and community organizations that want to change the direction of state transportation policy.

By more than 2-to-1, members of the public who submitted formal comments on Maryland’s proposed Interstate 270/I-495 express lanes plan objected to the tolls motorists would pay to use the lanes. https://t.co/nY2xUwpdrL
No hard questions & amendments can replace the need for full financial review of a $6 billion 60-year toll lane contract to build private luxury toll lanes on I-495 & I-270. Tell Comptroller Franchot to not vote until he knows the facts: https://t.co/QGqtYIJZZ4
MoCo Council wants the MD Board of Public Works to delay tomorrow's vote on a pre-development agreement with a private partner to develop the I-495/I-270 toll lane project.

"Gov. Larry Hogan and highway industry lobbyists have launched a massive campaign of intimidation and misinformation to pressure local governments into reinstating private toll lanes... in the region’s long-range plan." https://t.co/vWUx4s9ri8
The word "climate" never appears in this editorial lamenting the fact that regional planners in MD decided to abandon a plan to massively expand two interstates in the DC region. @ggwash@betterDCregion @BethOsborneT4A 1/

A big road bump for the I-495/I-270 toll lane project in Maryland today.
The regional Transportation Planning Board, made up of local officials and more, decided to pull the project from its long-range plan because of environmental and climate concerns.
What does that mean?
Historic vote @NatCapRegTPB today. Not only did they vote to address climate change in their transportation plan by 2024, they voted for a motion by Rockville Mayor Bridget Newton to REMOVE the I-270/495 toll lane project from the plan.
We need more public transportation options, expansion of MARC, and more teleworking, not a wider highway with crazy high tolls. #dontwiden270#transitnottolls
The Governor is moving forward with this proposition despite community opposition and disastrous impacts on Maryland’s environment & climate.
This Tuesday, tell MDOT: NO private toll lanes on I-495 and I-270 & no hearings for toll rates when the contract hasn’t even been signed.
Emergency rally to stop the P3 Boondoggle TOMORROW (6/8) @ NOON!
MDOT scheduled this last-minute hearing on toll rates for a contract that hasn't even been signed yet – the first step twds final approval of this disastrous project.

From John Stout of @uspirg in the @baltimoresun: Downsizing Capital Beltway project good - scrapping it better
"Even scaled back, the governor’s proposal... won’t work because wider roads will mean more drivers, not less." https://t.co/VBuFtb6rpS
"It’s estimated that motorists traveling from Virginia to Maryland between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays will see the soft rate cap exceeded more than 60% of the time." https://t.co/buctodlm0k
🚨 BREAKING: FHWA & MDOT have identified a new preferred alternative for Hogan's highway expansion. The focus is on building a new American Legion Bridge and delivering two HOT lanes in each direction on I-495 west and lower I-270. https://t.co/xPJjWs53XE
Our coalition has written an open letter to Comptroller @peterfranchot, expressing our disappointment that he is moving away from his commitment not to approve the I-495 & I-270 expansion before the final environmental review is complete. https://t.co/fIt8YcioVF
