So a kaps (@hesgoldenken) said that she loves VISA and asked why we A’TIN didn’t give it its flowers when it came out.
And you know what? That was a great question.
It’s true that you won’t find many A’TIN who would name VISA as their favorite SB19 song. But maybe that has less to do with its quality and more to do with the kind of song it is.
I commented that, to me, VISA is like the Tita at every Filipino party who tells you, “Tumaba ka,” when you literally just came there to eat lumpia and pancit.
You didn’t ask for her assessment. You were having a perfectly good time. And yet here she is, making you suddenly feel exposed and uncomfortable.
That’s VISA.
Musically, it doesn’t necessarily try to seduce you the way some of SB19’s more melodic songs do. The production can feel lean and almost abrasive in places. The percussion pushes. The brass practically barges into the room and demands your attention. Even Ken described the instrumentation and melody as unconventional and unorthodox.
And then Pablo starts writing about tae, success, passports, validation, Filipino talent, mobility, bisa, and the strange reality of having to prove your worth somewhere else before people recognize it at home.
Ha? Ano ano daw?
It’s funny. It’s chaotic. It’s satirical. It’s right in your face.
And I think that discomfort is part of the design.
Because underneath all the humor is a rather serious question: What does Filipino talent have to do before it is allowed through the door?
SB19 themselves said VISA grew partly from their experiences with visa applications during their international tour, but they deliberately widened the conversation to include Filipino athletes, creatives, and professionals who represent the Philippines abroad while still encountering barriers to mobility and opportunity.
So perhaps we didn’t immediately give VISA its flowers because VISA wasn’t asking to be admired or adored.
It was the Tita telling us something we didn’t particularly want to hear.
And months later, I’m beginning to think: “Ay. May point pala si Tita. Tumaba nga ako.” 😭
Maybe VISA isn’t supposed to be everyone’s favorite SB19 song.
Maybe it’s one of those songs whose value becomes clearer the longer you sit with what it’s saying.
And who knows? Maybe Tita will get the flowers she deserves in the end after all. 😉💐
Thank you kaps for the inspiration and let’s stream VISA!
