Killybegs Fishermen's Organistion says: As the #Irish pelagic fleet face imminent tie-up with their meagre quotas almost caught for the year, thirty-six Norwegian pelagic #trawlers off the west coast of Ireland, reported landings of over 40,000 tonnes of blue whiting last week. This is more than the entire Irish quota and yet they still have hundreds of thousands of tonnes left to catch. Fishing alongside them are nine Russian Freezer trawlers, operating with no monitoring or control and zero visibility on what they are catching. A level-playing field?
Cruel finish for the boys showed a lot of fight, talented group and quality young players coming through. But need to get their shit in order off the field starting from the top down.

2 hours - 10 political leaders. No marine topic discussed. The words 'fisheries' and 'fishermen' used once and not by the major parties .. An island nation with #seablind leaders who don't include the resource of the sea around us in the nation's future.
Everyone should listen to this podcast, such a powerful chat. The quote from Gladiator springs to mind "Death smiles at us all. All a man can do is smile back."
Sad state of affairs for an island nation as we watch our fishing industry go down the tubes, due to years of political neglect, to benefit our EU "friends" and Nordic states. Shameful.
Commercial fishing is in a death spiral. The Irish government should lead a campaign to end industrial fishing altogether and focus on promoting low impact boats and restoring biodiversity.
And some time make the time to drive out west
Into County Clare, along the Flaggy Shore,
In September or October, when the wind
And the light are working off each other
So that the ocean on one side is wild
With foam and glitter
Life is beyond cruel. A fine man, from a brilliant family, Caolán Finnegan died this morning. Represented Armagh, Crossmaglen & St Colman’s Newry. Tried everything to fight off Brain cancer. A warrior on the field and off it. A role model for us all. He was just 20
