@KevinPe86942331 I feel this is a very tricky question to answer. the reason being is that the student may trust you, but the parents may not. In my opinion, the best way to meet and get to know your parents' parent-teacher conference. The problem is that a large chunk of parents don't go.
@sarahellensanks@sncdveselik I love that you brought up social workers and the others. We are only teachers, after all, we do not have all the answers and can send the kids to people who are trained to help them and there is no shame in saying that someone else is better suited to help them.
@sncdveselik A6. I feel this could be one of the most important things a teacher can do to help their students. Everyone goes through hard times and knowing someone is there for them is very important.
@Mr_VandenPlas A.5 I worked for a group called CFUT that dealt with urban teaching. They taught us that the kids that go to our schools have so much trauma that we don't even know about. The best way to help them is to get to know them so they will open up and tell us so they might help them.
@sarahellensanks@KevinPe86942331 THIS IS AWESOME!!! Thank you for sending this, I feel this will help us all to learn how to properly help our kids. 😀😀
@KevinPe86942331 A.4 I personally have known a few people who have gone through tuff times. I talked with them and was there for them, and as a mentor figure, I told them to go see an expert. I feel as a teacher I would have done the same.
@DwightG48082361@sarahellensanks@Mr_VandenPlas Yes, I agree, the importance of the mental and emotional state is not to know by people nowadays. If a child's mind is on something else that is much bigger then, what is a gerund phrase, then how can they learn properly.
@sncdveselik One of my own personal ways that I deal with traumas is, I will go for walks alone. These may be on campus or at home in the forest. The sound of nature and the beauty of it tends to help me clear my head and put things in perspective.
@Mr_VandenPlas My go-to for students will be just being there. I have seen personally sometimes people don't want to be told everything will be ok and how it may help in the long run. Sometimes just being there and listening to them and a hung if needed will be enough for the person,
@KevinPe86942331 A.1 One of my biggest concerns when helping students who are dealing with grief is that I do not know what the child's grief is like. Therefore I am nervous that if I try to help they may lash out and think less of me. I feel like sometimes saying less is more.
@Mr_VandenPlas The rolling schedule is good. I like this because it gives students the opportunity to have something new each week and keep them interested. It may be a little confusing, but the benefits out weight the costs.
@KevinPe86942331 A5: I agree with the article. In high school, we had five minutes to get from class to class, and that was not nearly enough time. I feel that 13 minutes is a pretty good time. If one has to run back to their locker they can or stop for a bathroom break they can do that as well.
@sncdveselik A4: As a teacher, I think it would be nice. It gives us more time in the morning to work and get lessons ready. As a student, it would be good as well. Like the reading talks about how the kid's brain doesn't work as well that early in the morning. 🧐🧐
