Thailand, 11 countries strengthen crackdown on call centre scam trafficking networks
Thailand and 11 other countries agreed to strengthen intelligence sharing, cross-border investigations, financial tracking and victim repatriation to combat human trafficking linked to call centre scam syndicates, the Royal Thai Police said.
The agreement was reached during a meeting in Chanthaburi attended by law enforcement agencies from China, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, the United States, Indonesia, India, Australia, South Korea and Nepal, as well as representatives from international organisations and Thai government agencies.
Deputy national police chief Pol. Gen. Thatchai Pitaneelaboot said authorities from participating countries rescued 14,694 trafficking victims from 46 nationalities between Feb. 20, 2025 and March 31, 2026. Thailand also repatriated 2,774 Thais from Cambodia in 105 operations between 2022 and 2026 after they became involved with call centre scam and online gambling networks.
The meeting also agreed to strengthen efforts to prevent recruitment through fake job offers, investment scams and romance scams by increasing intelligence sharing and public awareness.
