With how AI is rapidly transforming our world, understanding its basics, especially how to use it responsibly in schools, workplaces, and everyday settings, has become essential.

I always find it interesting facilitating sessions with students, teachers, and working professionals. Many are understandably anxious about how much AI can do and whether their jobs are safe. Employers, on the other hand, worry about whether work is still being driven by human intelligence. In schools, nearly all stakeholders share similar concerns.

But AI is not something to fear. It is something to embrace, thoughtfully and ethically. At the same time, we must be cautious. Over reliance on these tools can weaken critical thinking and creativity if we are not intentional.

I was honoured to facilitate a session with Conservation Through Public Health on how to optimise AI in the workplace, focusing on practical use, productivity, and keeping the human touch at the centre of everything we do.

Proximity will have you sitting at tables you had no business sitting at!

So I am in Dar es Salaam for the 100th Rotary District 9214 Conference with Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka. I spot Madam Jenifer Musisi and tap @DoctorGladys, telling her to go meet her. She does, and they end up spending a lot of time together throughout the event.

The following day we sit at the same table. At this point I am acting all nonchalant, but deep down I am so excited to be in proximity with the mighty Jennifer. This is a woman I have always admired for her courage and firmness. Ohh that lady has a spine! I have been a fan of her work and ethics for a long time.

In fact, while authoring my book "Graduation the Traditional Dream," she was one of the people I wanted to feature to share her insights about education and life in general. I failed to get to her, but here I was, being so close to her.

Later I find out that we are actually sleeping at the same hotel. On one of the nights, we even go back together in the same car. These very big, latest Land Cruisers please!😄

At that moment I am thinking, wait, no way. I am keeping it all together, but deep down the boy in me is dancing empele. I was so excited.🕺🏽

When we reach the hotel, for some reason we delay in the lounge. Her, Dr. Gladys, Jennifer's daughter Esther, and I end up talking about a lot of things.

Then something tells me, are you going to play it cool or are you going to be a man and tell this woman how much you admire her? I say to myself, bet.

I tell her, you know what, all this time I have been acting normal, but deep down I am very excited to meet you. I tell her about a selfie I took with her at one of her famous Kampala City Carnivals. I ask her why she is not active on Twitter. She says, child, long story. I say okay, but why are you so rare? At least I need to see you speaking in schools to inspire young people because you have a lot to offer. She goes, hmmmm...🤭

I ask her whether she has intentions of authoring a book because I need to read it. She says when the time is right, you will get to see that book.

I was so happy to meet you Madam @JenniferMusisi. You did so great while at KCCA. We appreciate you!

Esther was so insightful when it came to foreign politics. She is so eloquent and I would love to see her more in the content creation space. She is amazing.

I can testify, life is so spiritual. Everything we are looking for is also looking for us. That's how I will stumble and end up in the statehouse to discuss national issues!😄🤲🏽

Communities are a valuable resource, saving us a lot of money in conservation. They are also the primary beneficiaries.

My journey with communities began while I was still at UWA, serving as their first wildlife veterinary officer. When people made gorillas sick, I was tasked as the only vet in the organization at the time to carry out health education program in the local communities to reduce the risk of disease transmission between people and gorillas.

Gorillas would wander into community gardens, touch dirty clothes, and contract scabies, and other diseases.

Just as I was about to present the solution to this problem, a ranger stopped me and suggested, "Let’s listen to the community and hear what they have to say." The community came up with better solutions than what I had planned to propose. This experience taught me that communities know what is best for them; our role is to facilitate that. It was a humbling moment for me as a veterinarian who was accustomed to solving people’s problems.

When we engage communities, we must let them lead and drive the efforts if they are to last for a long time, and engaging women in conservation is essential.
