It's been said million times before but is worth repeating again and again:
Tennis scoring system is genius. You can't run out the clock or take a victory lap even if you have totally outplayed your opponent and deservedly built a huge advantage — it could still be reversed.
The TNT crew have been on it. You can tell that many of them aren’t that familiar with tennis, but that they attempted to research beforehand. They also do a good job of relying on the former tennis players analysis to tell the story while also bringing a fresher take.
Hard to articulate how much of a basketball tragedy this is for Jayson Tatum.
You won't find a player that cares more than him. Genuinely carries himself with a team-first approach, always pushes himself to play through minor injuries, and has never made excuses when the Celtics fell short.
I'll have a full column on this tomorrow so I won't go too long here, but this is what really bugs me: It shouldn't take an Achilles tear, or him missing a full year, for people to appreciate what he's about. Or to fully appreciate what he's accomplished by age 27. No hyperbole, Tatum was on the verge of playoff achievements and sustained success that only a *handful* of players have enjoyed in the first half of their career.
He will be named to his fifth All-NBA team within the next week, and it feels cruel for this to happen to a player that never misses time. One that perpetually leads 55+ win teams and finds a different way to improve each season. It shouldn't take a player of that caliber having his prime interrupted for viewers to finally recognize he's everything you'd want in a franchise superstar.
An important lesson in life and politics—obvious but always worth repeating—is that the wisdom required to identify a problem is distinct from the care required to solve it.
Or, to be more direct: It would be nice to have a organization that (a) recognized the costs of procedural kludge in government, (b) respected the constitution, (c) wasn't so completely careless that in an attempt to restructure the Department of Energy around nuclear security accidentally fired hundreds of people who worked in the department with the words "Nuclear Security" in the title
