math professor at @berrycollege, mathematical dabbler, origami enthusiast, sci-fi buff and neophyte juggler. there’s no word in English for my style. (he/him)
each of these guys is more of a mathematician than i was at his age and having them as students has enriched my life. if you have a problem with any of them because of their faces, then you have a problem with me.

@jemelehill one thing impacting KC, with respect to being below a typical june, is that ETS opted out of KC for a variety of AP readings this summer because of the world cup and moved to Louisville instead. this is probably on the order of 2000–3000 hotel rooms over 3 weeks in june.
@travisakers as a history teacher, would you just tell your students to "memorize the damn dates"? or would you want them to understand the causes of events that happened on particular dates? understanding should wildly precede memorization, unless you're learning lines for a play.
@Tazerface16 yes
x-100%x = x-x = x(1-1)=x(0)=0
but you don't need x to be a positive real number. this will be true in any field that contains the rational numbers as a subfield, or any vector space over the reals.
@cathasach4bikes but there is no dark side of the moon. (other than the Pink Floyd record.) there's a far side of the moon that is aways facing away from earth, but that side gets light sometimes too.
@Patriotthought7@mattnightingale in science the word "theory" does not mean "unproven hypothesis. scientists use that word to denote a cohesive field of study. for example "the theory of gravitation" isn't a claim that gravity is unproven, but rather all of the accumulated knowledge about how gravity works.
@1BusyDad@mattnightingale the hole in the ozone layer was allowed to repair itself because nations got together and agreed, in the Montreal Protocol, to stop using so many ozone depleting chemicals.
other things change because that's how science works.

@mathemactivist i was on the student activities board in college and interacted with Rondell Sheridan enough times that he knew my name when we bumped into each other.
