Science has always been driven by the desire to understand/explain the world. Mathematics is no different, it’s driven by the desire to understand the most fundamental parts of the world. Often solving a difficult problem involves new techniques, which are valuable for progress, but serve as general markers that progress (in a given direction) is being made.

Tao is truly a man of science, someone who cares that science, mathematics, and human prosperity continues. I still remember being inspired by his explanation of the cosmic distance ladder.

@rynorhn One could argue that gain of function research in viruses is an excellent direction to “solve cancer”, so let’s pour a trillion into doing it as fast as possible? For the obvious reason, it should be properly done (regulated and aligned with humanities interest)
