I am thinking about the power of tasks that students feel are within their reach but they just haven’t gotten there yet. A ten minute activity that led to multiple days of students thinking.

Good math week- did @AoPSNews All Ten with a group at my daughter’s school. They collectively got 1-9 but not 10. They couldn’t believe I wouldn’t tell them how to get it. A few students were sneakily continuing to work on this when we moved on to other activities.

And then 2 days later my daughter came home to say one of the students from the initial group had been working on it more and had figured out how to make 10

I got a text a few hours later from the calculus student with a photo of their work- they had gotten curious and decided to try it out when they got home.

When my daughter got home, I was tutoring a high school student in calculus. Daughter was still trying to figure out 10 and got her friend that was over involved. Friend was working at it even though they had not been there earlier in the day when it started.

Wonderful keynote yesterday at #NZAMT18 from @MrJohnRowe. He made talking about math cool using 2 points and @Desmos to make his point. And I now know that @MrJohnRowe is far more productive on transpacific flights than I am.
