@geonz@bowmanimal It's one thing to think, "In terms of three-point-one-fours," but very abstract to think, "in terms of ratios of the circle's circumference to its diameter."
@wtgowers One of my favorite articles in #mathed theorizes why this is hard: mathematical conceptions include processes and objects, and it's hard to make the leap to thinking of a process (like we are introduced to functions) as the object in another process. https://t.co/O0eQpH0W2I
@ilana_horn @HthrLynnJ @annehelen I've had a rather negative, albeit uninformed, reaction to Substack. When blogs are generally independent and free and RSS is independent and free, I struggle to be convinced that I need to participate in another company's money-making scheme.
Meet Marley Horn, whose love of coaching soccer was her first foray into working with children. However it was her work in a bilingual elementary classroom that sealed her fate and love for teaching. Meet our 2023 Outstanding Grad in Elementary Education: https://t.co/rmAIIw523e
@saravdwerf The thing I generally *want* to say (but don't) is, "Do you have any idea how not-good you are at lots of things? And how okay that is? Math has a way of making you feel like you're not good at it when, in fact, you're fine. Maybe even better than fine. Just like lots of things."
From Chat GPT: "When teaching a four-year-old to read, it is important to understand the child's learning style and tailor the instruction accordingly...Every child has a unique learning style, which may include visual, auditory, or kinesthetic (hands-on) learning." Cool, cool.
@karlfisch Ever stop to really think about how many cameras there are everywhere? It could be an interesting mathematical investigation for students. I'm in my home office and I count about a dozen if I include front and rear for a tablet and 2 phones, webcams, and what's in my camera bag.

@ilana_horn I wonder if we've over-focused on class size, and how much that could be a factor in this. At least in secondary, the quick way to smaller class sizes is to teach more class periods and give up potential planning time.
@ddmeyer I know we'd all like it if teaching fit into 8 practices instead of 19, but this is one of those that the @TeachingWorks folks got right and make it worth having a longer list. https://t.co/z8xcPZfc5B
