Twenty years ago, Makena arrived at our Nairobi Nursery as one of the smallest elephants the Keepers had ever seen. We raised her, she went wild, and she has spent years as the most devoted nanny and protector in her ex-orphan herd – through personal losses that would have broken a lesser elephant.

And then, with the best early Christmas gift we could have asked for, on 14th December 2025, she arrived at the stockades with a brand new baby girl. She came, it seemed, with one purpose: to introduce her daughter to the people who raised her.

Midnight visitors don't get better than this trio!

Ex-orphans Ambo, Kauro, and Rapa came by our Ithumba Unit last month, arriving before the sun rose. When the doors opened, they came in. Roho greeted Rapa. Lodo found Ambo. Kauro had a brief exchange with Choka. Lucerne was shared out and everyone settled in to enjoy it.

A beautiful sunrise in Tsavo, with Mutara’s ex-orphan herd striding in from the bush.

Every grown elephant you see here is an orphan we rescued, raised, and reintegrated back into the wild. In fact, many are now raising wild-born calves of their own — one of our newest additions is baby Sunni, keeping pace here despite his tiny legs!

Although these elephants are now leading fully independent, wild lives, they still choose to visit us from time to time, which is an incredible privilege.

Much of the Park and surrounding region is now under rebel control. Amid instability, the Virunga Alliance continues its mission — to protect nature, support communities, and help build a foundation for lasting peace.
