Tron (1982) was ruled ineligible for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects because the Academy considered its use of computer-generated imagery to be “cheating.”

The irony is that Tron (1982) wasn’t even fully computer-generated. Its groundbreaking visuals were created through a mix of hand-drawn animation, rotoscoping, miniature photography, backlit film, and early computer graphics.

Computers accounted for only part of the final image, but the film was still labeled as having “cheated.” Today, those same techniques are celebrated as groundbreaking innovations that helped define modern visual effects.
