Q&A: "Is self image another issue?"
Yes, definitely. It links in with building students' Mathematical Resilience. A slide I skipped due to time, but Richard Butterfield broke MR into 7 categories, one of which is Self Concept.

@mrskidson14 There's also self-efficacy (which I put as part of self concept) that looks at the student's perceived ability to solve maths problems successfully; both feed into a student's self-image in maths
I used to have a student who would colour in mandalas in maths lessons - I didn't think that it helped reduce her Maths Anxiety but looking back it makes sense! #MathsConf26@mrskidson14
@edmunds_dr I was once observed and had this as feedback - the head googled "maths differentiation" and said "Look, there's lots results about it on Google! Go there to improve!" as feedback. I had to point out that differentiation is part of calculus as a topic...

@LeannePBB Students can learn the trait from any adult, not just teachers or parents; on TV shows regularly when there's a maths question, you hear "I'm bad at maths... etc" - it gets laughed at. Getting students to know that it impacts them is a good first step too (see site for more info)
I think compulsory training for all school staff in not saying 'I'm rubbish at maths' in front of kids would be revolutionary for growth mindset purposes.
