#WATCH | Delhi | On HPV vaccination importance for 14-year-old girls, ICMR Director General Dr. Rajiv Bahl says, “We are talking about the HPV virus, which is the only intervention we have which can actually prevent cervical cancer in women. Cervical cancer kills at least 70,000 – 80,000 women every year in our country… HPV infection is caused due to sexual contact and is very common… When the infection remains for a long time, it can develop into cancer… the vaccine prevents HPV infection in girls, protecting them from cervical cancer…”
VIDEO | Delhi: Dr. Seema Singhal, Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at AIIMS Delhi, applauded the government’s cervical cancer awareness drive, saying:
“The government’s initiative to provide the HPV vaccine to girls aged 9 to 14 is a very important step. This aims to eliminate cervical cancer from our country. It is a very welcome move by the government, and we are all grateful for this effort..."

#WATCH | The HPV vaccine, used safely in over 160 countries for more than two decades, protects against cervical cancer and cannot cause infection.
Mild side effects like redness or fever are rare, with serious events extremely uncommon.
In India, the vaccine has been safely administered in the private sector, and the government program will now provide it free to all adolescent girls, making this life-saving protection accessible to everyone: DG, ICMR Dr Rajeev Bahl
