Today SIMDI Group and NEMTECH Maldives Pvt. Ltd. have officially signed a contract for the EIA, Design, Dredging, and Construction of a Supply Jetty and Harbor in Ekasdhoo Island, Shaviyani Atoll, Maldives.

Ekasdhoo is home to KuriFresh, SIMDI Group’s agricultural initiative dedicated to producing and supplying high-quality, locally grown fresh fruits, vegetables, and poultry to resorts and local markets across the Maldives.

The development of the Supply Jetty and Harbor marks another important milestone in SIMDI Group’s continued investment in Ekasdhoo, strengthening the island’s connectivity while supporting the growth of its agricultural operations

Who Benefits From Unused Tourist SIM Packages?

A simple question for our telecom operators and regulators:

Thousands of tourists purchase prepaid SIM cards and data packages when they arrive in the Maldives. Many leave after a short holiday without fully using what they have already paid for.

What happens to that unused value when the package expires? Who ultimately benefits from it?

Even if the average unused value is only a few dollars per tourist, when multiplied across our large number of annual visitors, the total could be significant.

There is nothing wrong with operators making legitimate revenue. But there should be transparency about how much tourists collectively pay for prepaid packages, how much is actually consumed, and how much expires unused.

Perhaps it is time for the relevant authorities to look at the numbers.

Small amounts multiplied by millions can become very big numbers.

I don’t blindly trust any government or any leader.

Being a responsible citizen doesn’t end when you cast your vote. Holding governments accountable is a continuous responsibility, regardless of who you voted for.

We need to break the mindset Maldivian political parties have normalized: that if the party you voted for wins, you’re somehow expected to stay silent about its wrongdoing.

Your vote is not a promise of silence for five years nor is it an approval for the gov to do whatever they want to for 5 years.

If the government you supported does something wrong, question it. If it wastes public money, call it out. If it abuses power, speak up.

Loyalty to a political party should never come before accountability to the country.

Interesting to see headlines.

Are these “new routes” real commitments or just headlines?

The reality on the ground is far more different.

At Velana International Airport, Jet A-1 fuel prices have surged by 66.93% (USD 1.19197 to USD 1.99) placing immediate cost pressure on airlines that have already sold tickets and confirmed summer operations. Our jet fuel prices and ground handling charges are one of the highest in this region.

Add to this uncompetitive pricing, and we are now seeing airlines actively questioning the viability of operating to the Maldives; recently a major European charter shifting to Mauritius thier Summer schedule as Maldives isnt viable.

Unless these fundamentals are addressed, we may see more severe flight cancellations in the coming weeks and months. I can list dozens of airlines unhappy and looking to shift away from Maldives. So let's first retain the existing flights too.

Maldives remains world-class. But airlines operate on economics, not headlines.
