The way people practice religion is almost like a joke to me. You do all sorts all year, only to fly to Mecca and walk around the Kaaba, or show up in church on Sunday and sit in the front row. After the whole ritual is done, you return to your normal life. 🫠
Today, we said “Thank You.”
Thank you, Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, our Second Prime Minister, for your lifelong sacrifice and unwavering commitment to our beloved Kenya, to Africa, and to humanity as a whole. Your courage, resilience, and love for this nation have inspired generations and helped shape the democracy we are so proud of today. Baba, will never be forgotten. Your flame will be kept alive.
A special thank you to Mama Ida Odinga and the entire Odinga family for sharing the Prime Minister with us for all these years. Your patience, strength, and understanding have been the quiet foundation beneath his public service. Because of your support, Kenya stands taller — a freer, fairer, and more hopeful nation.
With full hearts, we simply say: thank you.
I extend my deepest gratitude to Hon. @skmusyoka ,for visiting us and paying respects at Baba's gravesite and condoling Mama. On behalf of the Odinga family, I wish you all the best and hope to see you soon.
If anyone still harboured doubts about Raila Odinga’s status as an enigma, those doubts can now be laid to rest. At Durham University in the United Kingdom, a dedicated team of professors and researchers has been commissioned to study, analyse, and document the extraordinary life and legacy of Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, CGH. When academia begins to turn your life’s journey into a subject of scholarly inquiry, it signifies that your struggles and ideals have transcended politics, they have become a syllabus in the school of history. From Koitalel to Raila: A Century of Resistance and Betrayal in Kenya’s Politics
Former Kenya Prime Minister and opposition icon Raila Odinga (L), who died Oct. 15, 2025, in India, was detained for more than nine years over various periods — the longest post-independence incarceration of any politician in Kenya.
The absolute record, however, belongs to anti-colonial leader Barsirian arap Manyei (R) of the Nandi people, who was detained for 42 years, from 1922 until 1964. He was the son of Koitalel arap Samoei, who led the Nandi resistance against British colonial rule in Kenya from 1895 to 1905.
Samoei was killed by the British on 19 October 1905 in an ambush, after he was lured to a supposed truce meeting that turned out to be a trap.
Raila’s father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga — an independence nationalist, pan-Africanist and democracy champion — declined to become Kenya’s first Prime Minister until Jomo Kenyatta was released from detention by the British and allowed to lead. Jaramogi was later sidelined by Kenyatta and briefly imprisoned.
Two political sons, two political fathers, whose fate was only different in that Jaramogi was not hanged.
My condolence message to Mama Ida Odinga and family on the shocking and sad news of the passing of Rt. Hon. @RailaOdinga
I will remember him as a fearless defender of the people, a voice of the voiceless and a steadfast comrade in the fight for the second liberation.
Rest in peace, Kinara Wangu.
Deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend and former Prime Minister of Kenya, Mr. Raila Odinga. He was a towering statesman and a cherished friend of India. I had the privilege of knowing him closely since my days as Chief Minister of Gujarat and our association continued over the years. He had a special affection for India, our culture, values and ancient wisdom. This was reflected in his efforts to strengthen India-Kenya ties. He particularly admired Ayurveda and traditional medicine systems of India, having witnessed their positive impact on his daughter's health. I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends and to the people of Kenya in this hour of grief.
IT WAS NOT "MAU MAU" THAT BROUGHT INDEPENDENCE TO KENYA
The narrative that credits the Kenya Land and Freedom Army (KLFA), popularly known as "Mau Mau," with being the sole catalyst for Kenya's independence on December 12, 1963, is being reevaluated. Historians and scholars are emphasizing that Kenya's path to freedom was paved by a complex interplay of social, educational, economic, and political empowerments among Black Kenyans, rather than solely through armed struggle.
1. Political Empowerment:
The journey began with the nomination of Eliud Mathu to the Legislative Council in 1944, marking the inclusion of Black Kenyans in colonial governance. This was followed by constitutional amendments like the Lyttleton Constitution of 1954, which allowed for the election of Black Kenyans to the Legislative Council, further political strides with the Lennox-Boyd and McLeod Constitutions, and finally, the Maulding Constitution of 1962, which set the stage for a bicameral parliament.
2. Economic Empowerment:
Black Kenyans started gaining economic footholds with ventures like the Lolwe Transport Company, led by Oginga Odinga, which operated across Kenya, showcasing Black economic enterprise. Similarly, Equatorial Travels Limited managed by Black Kenyans demonstrated economic resilience and capability.
3. Educational Empowerment:
The Tom Mboya Student Airlifts in the mid-1950s facilitated scholarships for Kenyan students to study in America, significantly contributing to the educational upliftment and exposure of Kenyans to global ideas and leadership models.
4. Formation of Political Parties:
The formation of political entities like KANU (Kenya African National Union) and KADU (Kenya African Democratic Union) in the early 1960s were pivotal. These parties not only mobilized Kenyans but also negotiated with colonial powers for self-governance. The release of Jomo Kenyatta in 1961 and his subsequent leadership in KANU were critical in these negotiations.
5. Negotiations and Transition:
The elections in 1963 and the subsequent formation of government under Jomo Kenyatta's leadership marked the transition to self-rule. These political maneuvers and negotiations were underpinned by the groundwork laid by earlier empowerment efforts, showing that independence was a culmination of both internal mobilization and external diplomatic efforts.
This revisionist perspective aims to highlight that while the Mau Mau rebellion did play a role in highlighting colonial injustices, it was the broader, multifaceted movement towards empowerment that truly facilitated Kenya's independence.
The narrative shift seeks to acknowledge the comprehensive efforts of various groups and individuals who contributed to this significant historical transition.
