To make things worse, I've read and listened to theories and concepts borrowed from non-Western authors without proper citation and recognition. In the end, who would look for it in Spanish or Portuguese?
I am going to say something that is going to sit badly with a lot of academics in US and European institutions, but I’m tenured and senior and I give zero fucks.
I’ve read a lot of recent academic scholarship in English language journals that rehashes things Mexican and LatAm
The academic application system is illogical and ruthless, as it demands free specialized, hard labor from unemployed people just to check if they have any chances to get a job.
I remember writing hundreds of pages only to be able to participate in selection processes.
Being on the academic job market has felt like getting my heart broken repeatedly. The amount of effort required to apply necessitates a degree of emotional investment in each position, so each rejection feels sharp & personal. I know it sounds dramatic, but this has been awful.
The problem lies in the way the EU will use such power. The moral politics involved in EU's decisions always take the form of outsourcing the dirty work, so they can maintain some sort of superiority. So, in a way, she's right. They are not strong enough.
Finland PM Sanna Marin says Europe is ‘not strong enough’ without the US.
Someone should remind her that EU defense spending in 2020 was nearly 4 times that of Russia: 232b to 61.7b
And EU defense spending is going to increase massively.

Amanhã é dia de vestir a amarelinha (ou a azulinha) com orgulho. A bandeira é nossa e a camisa também. Não vamos deixar um grupo se apropriar da nossa identidade.
Climate neutrality is such an interesting concept. It gives the false idea that it is possible to reach a zero sum game in the use of environmental resources.
I know this: next winter will be tough in Slovakia.

I miss academia, won't lie. But I don't miss academics that are unable to see and analyze empirical reality. At all.
They are a plague to science and society.
I see two problems in this argument.
(1) There is this thing economists call 'demand'. Surprisingly, people tend to be irrational in their life choices and consumption.
(2) Public goods are VERY different than personal goods in terms of production, efficiency and logic.
The problem is not simply that capitalism produces too much, but that it produces the wrong stuff: SUVs, fast fashion and planned obsolescence instead of public transit, affordable housing and universal healthcare. It overuses resources and still fails to meet even basic needs.
We, the West, should abolish the nation State, end political borders, and give hands as one global community.
Then we should try and convince all the others to not finish us as a society.
