What I find interesting is the selective outrage. For years, Africans have watched conflicts and humanitarian crises unfold across the continent. Thousands have died in eastern Congo as fighting involving M23 rebels and regional actors has continued. Nigeria has battled terrorism, banditry, kidnappings, and communal violence for years, with many innocent civilians losing their lives. Libya has struggled with instability and armed conflict since the fall of Gaddafi. Kenya has faced periodic political violence and security challenges, while Ghana and other African countries continue to grapple with crime, unemployment, and governance issues.

Yet when South Africans raise concerns about illegal immigration, crime, drug trafficking, border management, or law enforcement, some voices suddenly become the loudest critics. It often feels as though South Africa is expected to tolerate problems that other countries would address through their own laws and institutions.

Every country has the right and responsibility to enforce its laws, protect its citizens, secure its borders, fight crime, and maintain public order. Doing so should not automatically be labelled xenophobia. At the same time, enforcement must be lawful, fair, and respectful of human rights.
