Here is my take on Broos. His selections are not about form, they’re about synergy.
A team only gels and produces those intricate passing patterns when players have an existing understanding of each other’s movement, something that comes from playing together consistently.

Initially, Broos built around Sundowns players because their chemistry made tactical execution easier. Now, the balance has shifted toward Pirates players, and it makes sense. Spain did the same during their golden era, relying heavily on Barcelona’s core, not because others lacked talent, but because shared rhythm and style translate into cohesion.

This has nothing to do with individual brilliance; it’s about collective rhythm. The current Bafana side reflects that, less possession-based than before, more direct and fluid in transition, mirroring Pirates’ game model. One added advantage? Pirates players aren’t afraid to shoot from distance, which gives the team more attacking variety.

It’s unfortunate that there are no Chiefs players in the mix right now, but the formula is working. When Chiefs eventually dominate again, their core will likely form the backbone of Bafana too. That’s the logic, continuity, chemistry, and CAF-level experience over momentary form.

Broos’ system is not about individual stars, it’s about building a unit that functions seamlessly. And from a coaching lens, that’s how you sustain success, through a team that already speaks the same football language.
