Resources, information and support groups in the UK championing #matrescence (becoming a #mother). Brought to you by @mothersuncoverd Petition on website
Well, someone obviously told @itsanitarani the correct pronunciation of #matrescence while they were trailing the podcast @BBCWomansHour.
It’s a word we’ve been advocating for @MothersUncoverd for over 8 years. You can look us up here too @MatrescenceUK & https://t.co/CJUSUpmFt1
It was a privilege to speak at the #MaternityAPPG chaired by @MichelleWelshMP this week. A powerful discussion, with impassioned pleas from those working with #harmedmums to bring real change and righteous anger from the women themselves who’ve had devastating experiences.
Anyone identify…? #Christmas is magical… and absolutely chaotic. If you’ve ticked even one of these, you’re in good company.
Our @MothersUncoverd groups exist for moments just like this. The tears, the laughs,
the overwhelm and everything in between.
Fabulous talking to @MichelleWelshMP about the need to centre the woman’s experience in maternity care; investing to tackle the worrying rates of birth trauma & to champion lived experience groups that are so beneficial for mothers’ mental health & wellbeing in their matrescence
At the #LabourConference2025 I will be attending this roundtable event bringing together experts, parliamentarians, campaigners and clinicians to discuss maternal mental health services in the UK.
My focus, as ever, to shine a spotlight on the need for peer-led services.
This is what #maternalmentalhealth charities and organisations struggle with on a daily basis.
It’s a very tough funding landscape out there, we know that. Yet #mothers health is forever seen as less important than that of the child or the family as a whole.
Calling #Brighton and #Hove mothers!
@MothersUncoverd new peer-led drop-in for mums (come by yourself or bring your baby/toddler) at the fabulous #PuzzleBored shop on New Road. Come by yourself/with your baby or toddler. Pictures from this week’s session https://t.co/5OdMFVJHeU
For years as director of @MothersUncoverd, I’ve pointed out the correlation between parental mental health & impact on children, but investment is never made. This piece doesn’t state it: it starts with #Mothers, they need postnatal support @wesstreeting

Gwen Adshead on @BBCRadio4#Reithlectures about how trauma causes violence. She explains how neglect leads to inadequate sense of self, this relating to children of course, but also applicable to #mothers: often regarded as baby vessels, with little attention paid to their needs.
For many #mothers, giving birth is more than a physical act - it’s an emotional and spiritual journey, leaving a lasting imprint of pride, joy, happiness and sometimes even fear or sorrow. These memories become part of who we are.

Here we go again. Birth rate fallen to its lowest levels according to #ONS. Reasons: failing maternity wards, #birthtrauma, lack of postnatal support for new mothers, prohibitive cost of childcare. @MothersUncoverd we’ve seen it coming. https://t.co/wXzIYJlZf0
Just listening to a piece on @BBCRadio4 about birth rates in the UK - a report from the ONS showing deaths now outnumber births. Is anyone surprised?! I write this as CEO of a struggling charity supporting #mothers@MothersUncoverd that has received yet another funding knockback
I've read @MMHAlliance report into the postcode lottery of #maternal mental health care with interest & sadness, that so many #mothers are suffering. There is no specialist provision listed in #Brighton or Sussex. #MothersUncovered has saved lives

As director of @MothersUncoverd I am also not surprised that the rulings of the #OckendenReview haven’t been implemented. We meet #mothers all the time deeply traumatised by the birth of their child. Prolapses, haemorrhage, cracked pelvises are some of the horrific experiences
Thank you to @lucyjones for mentioning @MothersUncoverd and many other fantastic initiatives/groups in her excellent piece for @guardian about the loneliness of new #motherhood & #matrescence
Loneliness and isolation continue to be major reasons as to why mothers are struggling.
This morning I heard some of Ashleigh’s story before we record her @secretmotherpod next week. A harrowing and sadly all too common tale of #birthtrauma and inadequate care, in pregnancy, birth and #matrescence, made worse by the enforced isolation of Covid.
Mothers Uncovered supports mothers in #matrescence (the transition to ##motherhood). Our peer-led, creative support groups encourage honest conversations about the reality of motherhood. We started in 2008 and have supported over 3000 women.
