BREAKING: Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, the Emma Goldman Clinic, and the ACLU file a massive lawsuit challenging Iowa's new far-right ban on most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.

The organizations struck swiftly after the horrifying Republican legislation was passed, filing the suit less than 12 hours later. Unless the courts intervene, the draconian ban will take effect immediately when MAGA Gov. Kim Reynolds signs it on Friday.

The bill bans ALL abortions after an ultrasound is able to detect fetal cardiac activity, which usually appears around six weeks into the fetus' gestation — before many women are even aware that they're pregnant.

In other words, this new Republican law means that by the time many women become aware that they're pregnant they will have already lost the opportunity to have a legal abortion. Lives will be ruined and women will die in back alley abortions — exactly as Republicans intend.

The only exceptions included in the bill apply to risks to the life and health of the pregnant person, fetal abnormalities that make it unviable, and some exceptions for rape and incest as long as the crimes were reported to law enforcement.

Planned Parenthood and the other organizations are correctly claiming that the bill violates the constitutional right to abortion and substantive due process.

The lawsuit also points out that the MAGA ban violates Iowans' right to equal protection under the state Constitution because it singles out abortion from other healthcare and discriminates against women.

The lawsuit asks the court to grant an injunction to block the policy until arguments can be heard about its constitutionality.
