Last night, I took our son to see one of the greatest athletes of a generation play, Lionel Messi
Here are 5 lessons I took away and hope he will learn
1. At an elite level, the greats stand out because they do the little things right
Messi was playing with and against other professional athletes at the top of their sport.
He was noticeably better than all of them.
Sure, the MLS isn’t the premier league, but Messi isn’t 22 either.
What he does better than anyone else are the small fundamentals. Every touch, every dribble, every pass was perfect.
Be the best at the fundamentals. Even on a field full of professionals, you will stand out.
2. Soccer is a game of finesse, but it is far more physical than I knew
In my opinion, Soccer is more art than a sport. The way players move to create space and work with each other is like a dance to music only they can hear.
However, when the ball was up for grabs, these dudes were brutal. Pushing, shoving, and even hip-checking each other going full speed. It was far more physical than I knew.
When you grow up, work with your mind but never be afraid to roll up your sleeves and do the dirty work required to get the job done.
3. Sprint when needed and rest when appropriate
One of Messi’s criticisms is that he walks too much during the game. I would agree - he walks more than most.
But why would he run if he doesn’t have to?
What Messi knows is that it is a game of angles and short bursts of efforts.
When it’s time to work, work smart, not hard. Find the hidden angles.
When you need to sprint, go all in - hold nothing back.
When you don’t need to do either, rest, recover and rejuvenate - Your next challenge is coming soon.
4. Keep your head up and know what’s around you
Messi has a rubber neck; He is always looking around.
He’s looking for teammates, opponents and open space.
We live in a world where everyone is heads down or glued to their phones. They never look up to see the big opportunity in front of them or even catch the sunset.
Look up, identify your surroundings, and broaden your vision. You next big move is somewhere around you.
5. Don’t be afraid to shoot your shot
Shooters gotta shoot.
No doubt about it, Messi is one of the best shots in the game. And he’s not afraid to show you.
Free kick, Messi’s got it. Corner, Messi will take it. Coming across field with a strong left foot, Messi’s got that, too.
People in life will try to bring you down and make you feel unworthy to take your shot. Remember, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.
Trust yourself and when the opportunity presents itself, never be afraid to shoot your shot.
