On 16th March, 1968 Warrant Officer Hugh Thompson Jnr was flying helicopter recon for an attack on an alleged Viet Cong-controlled village in Vietnam.
As the attack developed, Thompson realised he was witnessing something something else:
A massacre.
He decided to act. /1 🧵
@cj_21605 @Mitch5263@Alex_Kozora you mean the accusation literally nobody, not even his own teammates, backed up? Didn't Sheldon Richardson (other player in on the same tackle) directly contradict Garrett's version of events?
@matt_vanarsdall @rudedrugs@Adams34A@svershbow ? Not necessarily, only through extrapolation of what he means. Just because God wants humans to multiply doesn't mean he would vehemently oppose removal of a fetus in interest of survival of the mother. Especially as the mother is needed for reproduction.
@matt_vanarsdall @rudedrugs@Adams34A@svershbow There are plenty of scholars on both sides- I encourage you to look at both, but please do read Feldman's- he makes my arguments far better than I can with char limits, and will lead to you to the contradictary rabbis who support your pov as well.
@matt_vanarsdall @rudedrugs@Adams34A@svershbow Go read Rabbi David M Feldman's Talmudic review instead of reading responses on stackexchange please- you have a point, hence why this has been hotly contested in my world for the last 60 years- but the mainstream understanding atm is the one I'm presenting.
@matt_vanarsdall @rudedrugs@Adams34A@svershbow "either way" mate you've made 0 valid points, cited no actual texts, responded to essentially nothing I've said other than vague waving off of information. The Hebrew Bible absolutely supports abortion- the Jewish people even have rites relating to induced miscarriage.
@matt_vanarsdall @rudedrugs@Adams34A@svershbow that's simply not how that reads- I've already explained it, feel free to go read the Mishnah for yourself. The first line refers to the death of the unborn, the second line (mischief) refers to harm done to the mother.
@matt_vanarsdall @rudedrugs@Adams34A@svershbow Depart is absolutely used to mean die in the Bible- multiple times in Psalms, Job, and in chronicles as well.
@matt_vanarsdall @rudedrugs@Adams34A@svershbow definitely room for interpretation, but even the KJVs translation makes no sense in reference to the baby: " hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow"- following, meaning events taken place after, such as the mother going septic.
@matt_vanarsdall @rudedrugs@Adams34A@svershbow The phrasing is more clear in the hebrew, but does depend on which translational lineage-"When men strive together, and hurt a woman with child, so that there is a miscarriage, and yet no harm follows, the one who hurt her shall be fined"- harm, referring to the mother's health.
@rudedrugs @matt_vanarsdall @Adams34A@svershbow with a fine is exactly correct, and further draws the distinction. The punishment for murder, in the same chapter, is defined as death. As the punishment for causing injury such that an unborn would cease to exist is a fine, it is clearly not a murder.
@JamesK05675789@Sapien83667191@QasimRashid Freedom to practice religion is a right here in the United States, regardless of who's on the court. He's pointing this out to say "This new ruling violates religious freedoms", which would be grounds to either challenge it or provisions would have to be granted to allow for them
@Adams34A@svershbow Commentary on Yevamot 69b provides insight that ancient rabbis considered the fetus a part of the mother's body, not as it's own being until the head breaches the canal. Judaism makes clear the fetus is a part of the woman and thereby grants freedom of choice
@Adams34A@svershbow Not only does this make any religious argument for "baby murder" illegitimate in the first 40 days, the Mishnah even provides specific protections, permitting abortions at any time should there be risk to the mother.
