We have joined a coalition of 19 leading European energy associations and transmission system operators to issue a joint letter to the European and UK Governments, calling for more efficient electricity arrangements between the European Internal Energy Market (IEM) and the GB market to unlock investment in offshore generation and grid infrastructure in the North Seas.

🗣️ Commenting on the letter's publication, RenewableUK Chief Executive Dan McGrail (@RenewableUKCEO) said:

“We are pleased to support this letter and see such a strong consensus from across the industry for transforming the North Seas area into a European green power hub. More efficient electricity trade between the UK and EU is a key part of this, and the letter sets out how we can secure investor confidence and fully develop offshore wind projects in the region, as recognised in the North Seas Energy Cooperation (NSEC) Action Agenda.

“We are collectively calling for issues around linking the EU and UK Emissions Trading Schemes (ETS) to be tackled as a matter of urgency, as extending European price coupling to the GB market is the only viable market mechanism to realise the potential of the North Seas. Alongside this, it is vital that we see evolution towards an improved market framework for the development of offshore grid. Resolving these issues would bring enormous benefits for both consumers and the wider industry, whilst helping the UK, EU, and wider European Economic Area (EEA) reach our respective climate and energy objectives.”

The world's longest land-subsea electricity interconnector is now live.

The 475-mile Viking Link cable connects Britain and Denmark's power grids, capable of transporting electricity to 2.5 million UK homes.

Interconnectors mean cheaper, more secure energy and lower emissions.

🔌⚡ Viking Link is SWITCHED ON!!

After 10 years of international collaboration with @EnerginetDK and 5 years of construction, our newest interconnector between the UK and Denmark is switched on.

The electricity link stretches a record-breaking 765km (475 miles) making it the world’s longest subsea and land connection. At full capacity Viking Link will allow the sharing of enough clean electricity to power up to 2.5 million UK homes.

Principal contractor @Siemens_Energy built the converter station in the UK, while @EnerginetDK built the Danish converter station. 
The HVDC offshore cable was manufactured and laid by @PrysmianGroup. The cable was laid on the seabed using a custom-made vessel The Leonardo Da Vinci which was then buried using Asso trenchers.   
Prysmian Group manufactured the HVDC land cable which was installed by @balfourbeatty, the offshore section was manufactured and installed by Prysmian Group in the UK and the Danish land section was manufactured by NKT and installed by Monck.
