I haven't been on this site in years. Just logging in to say: authoritarian adversaries of Canada and democracy are flooding X with disinformation in the lead up to our election.
Our enemies want Canadians to lose faith in our democratic institutions and in each other. Don't.

Is Canada measuring wealth accurately? "My report says... the top 0.1% own approximately 12% of all Canadian wealth versus what Statistics Canada's official data says, which would say about 3 to 4%," @DSkilleter (@SocialCP) tells @spaikin. At 8/11pm | Producer: @PreetiBhuyan
Today in "Capitalists Hate Capitalism" news: @theappeal has published the first-ever survey of national prison commissary prices, revealing just how badly the prison profiteer system gouges American's all-time, world-record-beating prison population:

The new @Forbes 2024 World Billionaire list just dropped and Canada has 67 families on the list.
Our new @SocialCP report, 'Billionaire Blindspot' helps explain why - sadly - none of them will be captured by StatsCan in their wealth survey.

@SocialCP released a report today on wealth inequality in Canada, written by @DSkilleter. It's a great paper!
Canada's official estimates from Statistics Canada seriously underestimate growing wealth concentration in Canada.

Wealth inequality in Canada is a bigger problem than we think, and our official data are misleading. Good piece from @DSkilleter
Canada is bad at studying wealth inequality and we explain why that matters https://t.co/gnWSarjRKj via @torontostar
Reposting this excellent analysis from @DSkilleter
As pointed out earlier, income stats are misleading without reference to wealth.
But Dan adds another point. Excluding capital gains income, which is a big source of income for the wealthy, distorts the picture even more.
Not that this metric is the end all and be all, BUT... @acoyne's chart measures 'after tax income' which excludes what these 1%ers made that year through capital gains.
When you include capital gains into the picture, 2021 had the 1% surge back to almost a 40 year high.

I am gutted to hear about John Duffy. I've loved John for over 30 years. I could listen to him talk for hours and I usually understood most of it. He was kind, smart, hilarious and mischievous. A big hole in our community. My love to his family.
Thanks @peggynash, @DeenaLadd, @DSafayeni , @Uber_Canada 's Laura Miller and @SaraMojtehedz for a fabulous event on Strengthening Workers' Rights in the New World of Work! Lots of food for thought!
Thanks also to partners @TorontoStar + @RyersonCLMR for helping make this happen!
