@d_feldman What's most interesting about this question to me is the assumptions underlying it. If you were talking to a young kid, the question wouldn't make sense until you explained businesses and competition. If you lived in a small integrated community, you'd have plenty of examples.

@MichaelStahlke For whatever it's worth, as someone who grew up to be a lifelong reader, and sometime journalist, I read and reread all sorts of terrible (and not-so-terrible) things as a kid. In retrospect, it only solidified reading as a sort of default activity for me, which has lasted.
