26 January - Holtzwihr, Colmar Pocket, France.
A diminutive 19-year old recently battlefield commissioned 2nd Lt named Audie Murphy clambers onto a burning tank destroyer, which can explode at any moment, and uses its .50 caliber machine gun against the enemy. Alone and exposed to German fire from 3 sides, he kills dozens of the enemy and halts their attack. He holds the position for almost an hour, fighting off constant attempts to eliminate him. Hit in the leg, he fights on until his ammunition runs out and then makes his way to his company. Refusing medical aid, he returns and leads a counter attack, forcing the enemy to withdraw. He will receive the Medal of Honor and will end the war as the most decorated American serviceman.

11 members of the Israeli Olympic Team are taken hostage by a Palestinian terror group, "Black September", at the Olympic Village in Munich, West Germany.

After a failed rescue attempt, first misreported as successful, all hostages are killed after a 21-hour standoff.

ABC's Jim McKay somberly delivers the news at 3:24am Munich local time the following morning.
