One of the biggest problems surrounding #Casteism in India is the glorification of textbook education by privileged communities that refuse to see the interconnection between outsourced physical work performed for centuries by other communities as a result of a social order and their indirect nurture that shaped their own "merit". Those who wax eloquent about value chains in their much flaunted MBAs do not see themselves as the product of a social value chain architected as a hierarchy of glass ceilings and iron walls.
Notably, caste has not been sufficiently deconstructed in the mainstream discourse inspite of a rain of PhDs on the subject. A Freudian truth is that casteism extends to the country's intellectual process in which interdisciplinary thinking, like intercaste marriage, is frowned upon.

I am an alumnus of an IIT. I spent almost six years within the IIT ecosystem, including my engineering degree. I was taught and mentored by professors, lecturers, teaching assistants, research scholars and faculty members across departments.

Not once did any professor ask me my caste. My batchmates and I never went around asking each other’s caste either. Many of my professors probably never knew mine throughout my entire degree because in my official name caste is not mentioned.

We neither discussed it among ourselves nor had professors obsessing over it.

That was my lived experience inside an IIT. So I find this sudden tendency to view every academic dispute through the prism of caste deeply disturbing. Investigate genuine discrimination ruthlessly wherever evidence exists, but don’t manufacture a verdict on social media before the investigation is complete. Turning every incident into a caste narrative is not protest, it is anarchy disguised as protest.

4 years btech in NIT + 2 years Mtech in IIT, but have never seen professors target someone based on caste.

In BTech, hardly there is any interaction between students and faculty outside the classroom. They will target you mostly if you hurt their ego and that is irrespective of who you are.
