Sunderland AFC is delighted to confirm that Jenson Jones has signed a new contract with the Club.
The full-back has put pen to paper on a two-year deal on Wearside.
Alongside 14 league games for the Under-21 side, Jones was a regular around the first-team training squads, making the bench for numerous Premier League games.
Rewarded with the contract, Jones said: “It’s a great feeling and a big opportunity. Hopefully, I can show what I can do in pre-season and be around the first-team. I don’t think I would have been in this position without being around the first-team.
“All the lads were really good with me coming in, helping me grow and develop, and it just makes me want to be over there a lot more. Growing up here, being at the Club for so long, that’s always been the end goal so being so close makes you want it even more.”
Head of Academy John Hewitson added: “Jenson has been rewarded a new deal at the club after impressing at Under-21 level, as well as being a consistent first-team member. This contract shows the commitment and belief the Club has in his ability.” https://t.co/iZo5gg7Jx6
I've been hurt by Sunderland players leaving before...
Darren Bent to Aston Villa, Patrick Van Aanholt to Crystal Palace, Stéphane Sessègnon to West Brom, even Josh Maja to Bordeaux...
I could always handle players like Henderson, Mignolet, Jobe taking huge, deserved leaps, Pickford the same after we were relegated... but I've never liked players making sideways steps.
Nothing though, will be able to prepare me for seeing Granit Xhaka in a Chelsea shirt... I can't begin to fathom it.
Chelsea are a bigger club, with a better chance of silverware over the next few seasons... but they've finished 10th or below twice in the last 4 years, finished 3 places below Sunderland in 25/26, losing to us home and away, and feel like a long way off their peak.
Xhaka would throw away EVERYTHING he's said about Sunderland, the fans, the community... to move back to London, work with a manager he's already worked with and represent one of Arsenal's biggest rivals?
I'm always reluctant to use words like betrayal... football is a business, players have to make decisions that they think is best for them...
But for me it would be one of the most soulless moves of the summer.
Got up without Xhaka, if he goes then thanks for last season, enjoy playing under Xabi Alonso for 6 months until he gets the boot. In ghisolfi we trust 👍🏻
