This weekend, the largest Open Source conference in the world, FOSDEM, took place in Brussels.
And to say that it got political would be an understatement.
During the first part of the opening keynote, the words "If we lose our democracies Open Source is irrelevant" adorned a slide.
Some other key quotes from the FOSDEM 2026 Opening Keynote (during which the speaker got very emotional, vulgar, and broke down multiple times).
"FOSDEM is interested in becoming more political, for obvious reasons."
"Some people claim that Open Source is not political... they have always been wrong."
"... democratizing the means of production..."
"If we lose our democracies, all of this is for sh*t"
"I'm German, I paid attention in history class. It is f**king scary."
"We are at a decision point for Western style democracies."
"The time to be nice about a few things is finally over."
In response to a slide which reads "Resist Organize Protect", the speaker simply said, "Self evident."
@JanoMacek @Palo_GuP@Aktualnecz "The introduction of inclusive institutions would create long-term benefits for everyone, but extractive institutions provide short-term gains for the people in power." https://t.co/4n8Bqxshal
@fugu3001 @rusnackor @jsuchal Suhlasim, moznost skontrolovat si parcely pre pripady autorizovanych aj neautorizovanych zmien je asi najdolezitejsi argument a pritom ho malokto spomina
@MAKA32165595 Mozno mu skus dohovorit aby si nezavrel ostatne moznosti. My mame kolegu stazistu (v Norsku), ktory studuje IT a vojensky vycvik si riesi vo volnom case. Lieta momentalne male lietadla a jeho ciel je F-35.
Observation suggests that people are switching to using ChatGPT to write things for them with almost indecent haste. Most people hate to write as much as they hate math. Way more than admit it. Within a year the median piece of writing could be by AI.
"The goal of Russian disinformation is not to make you believe in anything, but to destroy your trust in everything." Journalist Maria Ressa explains the real goal of disinformation operations—and how they're weakening democracy:
We are always in love with hiking.
2018. That was our hitchhiking trip by Norway. Only bagpacks, sleepbags and a tent surrounded by pristine natuuuure with many wild animals ❤️🩹
I want this time back 🥹
I need you, Danny.
Norway just gutted its basic science research funding. This is not the science environment that I signed up for when moving to Norway in 2018. Without strong support for (basic) science, Norways research landscape will soon be lost in mediocrity. Basic science drives innovation.
Sometimes we call it love, sometimes hate. Sometimes we call it war, other times - entry. Sometimes we call it occupation, other times - reality. (Rare recording of Karel Kryl found in 2019 in NRK archives, with EN Subtitles) https://t.co/NwZDiwEdiX
What if there is one more curve to be flattened? The slower you introduce a threat to your immense system, thanks to a mask, the better the progress for you. It is still a hypothesis though, but certainly interesting numbers. https://t.co/k5v7CfdJZ6
@_mnaser@ashinclouds@Ceph Already seen a cpu with faulty instruction causing fails in checksums 2 years ago. The only symptom was that zfs reported random disks as failed even though they were completely new and ok. It is pretty difficult when obvious reasons do not checkout.
As we honour the memory of Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová murdered two years ago on Friday, we must all renew our resolve to #protectjournalists, in #Slovakia and all over Europe. Full accountability for their murder must be established #allforjan#JanKuciak
Chcel by si mať pod palcom stovky “terabajtov” dát, niekoľko tisíc výpočtových jadier a sieť, kde tečú dáta aj po 40GBit/s linkách? Hľadáme k nám do teamu Linux Operations Administrátora. https://t.co/BVZb38Rkpz #linux#openstack
Student Jan Palach set himself on fire on this day 50 years ago in a bid to combat apathy in the face of Soviet occupation. He died three days later, on 19.1.1969. In this special report, we look back at perhaps the most radical protest in Czech history.
