This weekend, the largest Open Source conference in the world, FOSDEM, took place in Brussels.

And to say that it got political would be an understatement.

During the first part of the opening keynote, the words "If we lose our democracies Open Source is irrelevant" adorned a slide.

Some other key quotes from the FOSDEM 2026 Opening Keynote (during which the speaker got very emotional, vulgar, and broke down multiple times).
