PSA: I got scammed by someone impersonating Wells Fargo

I’m usually so aware of these scams and avoid them, but somehow fell for this one

800 number called me 3 straight times, it said potential scam, but I answered the 3rd one just to see

Guy said he’s from Wells Fargo, he knew the last 4 digits of my card number and my address, asked me if I made a transaction at a Walmart in Boca Raton, FL. I said no. He said ok we declined it anyway but we have to send you a new card now. He said a pin is being sent to my phone and I have to read it. Before I read the pin, I got skeptical and said “how do I know this is actually Wells Fargo”, he said if it wasn’t Wells Fargo, we wouldn’t know your address and social security #, and we wouldn’t be able to send a pin to your phone. The pin came from the same Wells Fargo # that texted me pins before, and I googled the phone # and it was Wells Fargo’s phone #. So I gave him the pin. He then sent 2 more pins, gave some reason, and I gave him those pins. He then put me on hold, said I had to talk to supervisor to finish it.

While on hold, I got skeptical and tried to log in to my online banking and couldn’t. That’s when I knew I got scammed and I panicked. Then I saw an email that my card was changed to some random person’s Apple Pay, and that my password was changed.

I called Wells Fargo, spent over an hour on the phone with them, they had to shit down both of my checking accounts and send new debit cards. And I got my new login.

They charged $25 Apple Pay, then they tried $2,500 twice and $1,000, but those 3 transactions were declined. They also went into my online banking and transferred $1 from one of my accounts to another.

Luckily I caught it quickly and resolved it. I know plenty of people will comment that I’m an idiot and it’s so obvious and how dumb am I. I’m usually super aware of these things but they got me with the masked phone # + code from Wells Fargo. I obviously should’ve hung up immediately and called Wells Fargo myself. After I hung up on them, they tried calling me 3 more times from another Wells Fargo phone #. It’s scary that people can mask their phone numbers so easily to look like a bank or some official company or a friend of yours.

I wasted a lot of time + now have no debit cards for a week + had to change my bank account number, but luckily they didn’t get anything (other than $25). Lesson learned. I made so many bad mistakes to get scammed here. I just wanted to post this so that everyone is aware of this scam.

The scene in Lahaina, Maui this morning is absolutely devastating.

The entire town is being destroyed by an intense wildfire, forcing residents to sheek shelter in the ocean.

Make no mistake, climate change is making scenes like this more frequent.
