The EEG data in this study is more alarming than the headline suggests.
Researchers at Zhejiang University (n=48) found a significant negative correlation (r = -0.395, p = 0.007) between short video addiction scores and theta power in the prefrontal cortex during executive control tasks. Theta power in prefrontal regions is your brain's signature for sustained attention and impulse regulation. When it drops, you lose the ability to hold focus on anything that doesn't deliver immediate reward.
The mechanism is a dopamine loop operating at the ensemble level. Your prefrontal cortex doesn't process dopamine one neuron at a time. Dopamine triggers coordinated activity across entire neural ensembles that sustains for up to 20 minutes. Short-form video trains your system to expect a new dopamine burst every 15 to 60 seconds. Your prefrontal ensembles never get the sustained activation window they need to build the gamma oscillations required for deep focus.
Willpower fails here because the addiction itself degrades the circuitry responsible for self-control. The study also found MPSVATQ scores negatively correlated with self-control (r = -0.320, p = 0.026). The more addicted you become, the less neurological infrastructure you have available to stop. A self-reinforcing decay loop.
The protocol that actually reverses this targets the hardware, not the behavior. Morning sunlight exposure (10+ minutes) to reset circadian dopamine release. Sustained duration cardio to upregulate prefrontal BDNF and restore dopamine receptor sensitivity. Deliberate boredom, 20 to 30 minutes of zero stimulation, to allow prefrontal ensemble activity to recalibrate.
You can't outperform a dopamine deficit with discipline. Rebuild the substrate first.

As Storm Éowyn approached Ireland, the Irish Marine Data Buoy Observation Network—managed by the Marine Institute & Met Éireann—recorded extraordinary ocean conditions.
📍 M3 Buoy (56km off the Cork coast):
🌊 Wave height: 20.15m - almost the length of a tennis court!
📍 M4 Buoy (83km off the Donegal coast):
🌊 Wave height: 18.75m
These data buoys withstood extreme conditions and continued to operate throughout the storm, delivering real-time data essential for weather forecasting, maritime safety, and climate research.

Many beaches erode during large-wave winter conditions and recover during the summer. However, by analyzing large datasets of beaches from satellite imagery, new @USGS research finds that many CA beaches don't fit this paradigm: https://t.co/yseS6RBX5M #remotesensing
