The story behind Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is that of a song that catapulted grunge into the mainstream.
In 1991, Kurt Cobain was living in Olympia, Washington, and wrote the main riff at home. He described it as an attempt to mimic the Pixies’ dynamic style (soft and explosive sections). The riff came about almost by accident while he was playing guitar. Originally, the lyrics were longer and more complicated, but Kurt simplified them greatly to make them more direct and raw.
The title came from a curious anecdote: Kathleen Hanna (lead singer of Bikini Kill and riot grrrl activist) went to a party at Kurt’s house and spray-painted on the wall: “Kurt smells like Teen Spirit.” She was referring to the Teen Spirit deodorant used by his girlfriend Tobi Vail (of Bikini Kill). Kurt didn’t know it was a deodorant and thought it sounded deep and revolutionary, so he adopted it as the title. He later said: “It’s a stupid way of saying that youth is dead.”
The song was recorded in May 1991 at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles for the album Nevermind, produced by Butch Vig. During the recording, Kurt was frustrated and the band played with a lot of energy. The famous shout “Hello, hello, hello, how low?” and the explosive chorus emerged almost spontaneously. Dave Grohl contributed the powerful drumming that defines the track.
When it was released as the first single in September 1991, no one expected what was about to happen. The video (featuring a concert at a high school gym that ends in chaos) went viral on MTV. Suddenly, Nirvana went from being an underground band from Seattle to filling stadiums. The song became the anthem of Generation X, a cry of rebellion, frustration, and teenage boredom against the adult world.
Kurt always had mixed feelings about the song’s massive success. He considered it “a riff of a riff” and came to hate it because it became the only thing people asked for at concerts. Even so, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” remains one of the most important songs of the ’90s and one of the most influential in rock history.
From a joke with deodorant and a homemade riff to changing the music industry forever.
