I’m sorry, I’m going to drag this conversation a bit away from Haaland, but do you people realise Ronaldo scored his 300th club goal in his 499th game? He was 27 years old, that’s two years older than when Messi did it. Today, he’s just 22 goals away from 1,000 goals.

How Ronaldo’s career peaked from the age of 30 is another statement on its own. He was never meant to be the greatest scorer ever, he didn’t even start at that. Brick by brick, he built that.

That’s what makes his career so great to me. Ronaldo didn’t wake up one morning and suddenly become this goalscoring machine. He evolved into it. He went from a winger whose biggest weapon was his ability to take people on, to a player who understood that his greatest value could come from what he did in and around the box.

He kept adding things to his game. Better movement, better positioning, better finishing, better anticipation, better understanding of space. Then as the explosiveness started to decline, he adapted again. He became more economical with his movements and even more ruthless in the final third.

And this is why I struggle when people reduce his career to just he was talented. Talent gets you to a certain level. What Ronaldo did after getting there was the real madness. He constantly looked at his own game and found something else to improve.

At 27, 300 club goals looked like an incredible number. At 30, you could already see the player was entering another phase. And somehow, instead of declining like most players do around that period, his goalscoring output went through the roof.

That is longevity, adaptation and obsession working together.

The greatest scorer ever wasn’t necessarily the player who had the most natural goalscoring profile at 18 or 20. He became that player over thousands of hours of work, repetition and adaptation.

Brick by brick. Season by season. Goal by goal. He built that.
