In July 1946 the United States towed 95 warships into Bikini Lagoon and invited the world to watch.

42,000 men. Two atomic bombs. Both 23 kilotons.

Able dropped from a B-29 on July 1. Airburst at 520 feet. Five ships sank. The bomb missed its aim point by nearly half a mile. Radiation still killed most of the test animals strapped to the decks.

Baker detonated 90 feet underwater on July 25. The first underwater nuclear explosion. A column of water and radioactive coral rose thousands of feet. Eight more ships went down. The rest became radioactive stoves. Contamination forced the cancellation of the planned third test.

167 Bikini islanders had already been moved. They were told it was for the good of mankind.
