@ClaireCoutinho Ethylene’s main energy input is natural gas - which we hardly tax. Electricity (which we do tax) is far smaller input. The real issue is cheaper gas in the US. Far cheaper than anything we could ever do in the North Sea.
So basically she’s taking nonsense.
[I’m in doomer mode tonight, so apologies in advance for this one, but…]
Speaking of climate con jobs…
- Carbon Offsets are a con job
- Sustainable Aviation Fuels are a con job
- Net Zero by 2050 is a con job
- Meaningful global-scale Carbon Capture and Storage anytime in your lifetime is a con job
- AI as a climate solution is a con job
- Green consumption is a con job
- Getting the international community to agree on geoengineering governance is a con job
- Limiting global warming to 1.5°C is a con job
All we really have, for now, is some successful examples of decarbonization in some sectors and some places, undergirded by accelerating warming. We’re on the freight train to a pretty nasty place, and we’re only lightly tapping the brakes, not even decelerating yet…
🚨⚠️ Terrible flooding in Kolkata, West Bengal in India today after 300mm (30cm/11.8in) fell in just 5 hours, the city’s heaviest in 50 years..
Many are saying they've never seen anything like this before...🌊🌊🌊
Chinese automaker BYD’s U9 Xtreme EV just hit a verified top speed of 496 km/h (308 mph) at Germany’s ATP proving grounds, making it the new fastest production car in the world, beating the Bugatti Chiron's 304.77 mph.
• 2,978 hp
• 80 kWh LFP battery
• 1,200v platform
• New track-grade LFP Blade Battery with dual-layer cooling, capable of 30C discharge rates for improved thermal management. Density of each cell is increased by 170% compared with the lower trim U9 800V system.
• Up to 500 kW charging speed
• Each of its four motors spin at a max of 30,000 RPM and is made of super thin 0.1mm silicon steel, a first in mass production
Solar’s price drop is astonishing: panels are now 98% cheaper than when I first analysed the cost of solar in 2004.
Today, building a fence with solar panels can be cheaper than using wood.
The intentional stupidity in this tweet is so enormous that on its own it would block out the sun
1. Solar works in the UK. Do you think it doesn’t?
2. Geoengineering needs looking at because of continued increase in fossil fuels; I admit controversial - but it may become our last hope for a habitable planet, later this century
